Daily Devotion: The Prayer of a Rightous Man is Power and Effective

James 5:13-18

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

This passage speak about the power of prayer. James said is there any one in trouble, let them pray. Is anyone sick? we should pray.  No matter what we are going through, we can come to God and pray. This is the solution for everything.

Why we do not pray? because we do not truly know how powerful prayer really are. We do not trust that God really listen to my prayer and through prayer my problem can really be resolved. There is a saying " the end of man is the beginning of God".  It shows us how stubborn we really are. not until we totally broken down and come to an end that we will start to truly seek God. inside of us, there is a strong desire want to rely on ourselves, rather to entrust all things to God's hand. we are busy trying to resolve our problem rather than relying on God.

What's the very things God continue to teach his people the Israelites? it is He is the only one we can rely on. We see it in the history of the Israelite clearly. In Exodus, it record the battle how the Israelites fight against the Amalekites.  The victory is not depend on how Joshua fight in the front, but it said whenever Moses lift up the hand the Israelites won, but whenever he lower the hand and Amalekites will win. lifting up the hand represents our prayer to God. Prayer is the path to bring down the heavenly power and strength. Only when we truly starting to rely on God, can we gain the victory of our life and in our ministry.

And it said the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.  We all know that none of us are righteous by our own deeds. we all fall short of God's glory being born in sin. Yet, by God's grace, and by the sacrifice of the Lord, we become righteous. Not by our own merit, but by the forgiveness and grace of God.  The salvation that came to us change our position and our identity.  in Romans it said that

[Rom8:14] because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

By receiving the Holy Spirit, we become God's children and his heir. And as the son of God, God gave us this authority.  in Matthew 7 it said

[Mat7:9-11]  'Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Jesus clearly told us that God loves us and he sincerely listen our prayer and fulfill it.  As the son of God, we should realize this authority that we have.

And James again gave another example:

[Jas5:17] Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.

[Jas5:18] Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

For the Jews, Elijah is the most powerful prophets.  He perform many miracle and even stop and call down the rain from heaven through his prayer.  but James said that he is a man just like us. it is not that he is different than us. he too is a human being, in another translation it said.  So we too have this authority to call down rain from heaven.

I remember one time we were going to a retreat. but it showed  in the weather broadcast that it was going to rain that day. The person who works in that retreat center warned us the fact that it was going to rain, we might have to cancel some of our outdoor activities. But God have given me so much grace that I told him, we would pray for God to not rain.  And that day, it really did not rain, and we enjoyed beautiful sunshine and outdoor time.  So the worker is very amazed.

in the time of Elijah, this is the time when the people turn away from God. the king Ahab worship many idols and lead the whole country a straight. the sin of man caused the curse on the land, so it did not rain for three and a half year. but through the prayer of Elijah, rain is called down and the whole land again receives nurture.

As we look at the time, it is also a time of thirst and famine.

【Amo8:11】 'The days are coming,' declares the Sovereign Lord ,  'when I will send a famine through the land-  not a famine of food or a thirst for water,  but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord .

Although US is such a rich country. outwardly seems not lacking, yet people's heart are so empty.  people are born,  empty and so many people are addicted to numerous things like alcohol, drug, sexual things.  TV, and many entertainment are trying to fill up this emptiness inside of people. but these are like trash and broken cistern that can not truly satisfy our hearts. Just as Jesus said to the Samaritan woman "if you drink this water, you will be thirst again. "  Since only the love of God can fulfill us.

It is so amazing that, through the prayer of Elijah, the rain from heaven came down and quenches the thirst of the land. We too are in this position of Elijah,  through our prayer, the heavenly rain, the rain of the Holy Spirit can come down to this land and quenches the thirst in people's heart.

In the coming days, we are going to hold this daily revival prayer meeting. we believe that the power of prayer can transform this whole land and bring down the blessing of God. It's be the Elijah of these days, to pray and bring down the heavenly rain!ot rain for three and a half year. but through the prayer of Elijah, rain is called down and the whole land again receives nurture.
